New Zealand continued their domination of their hosts, Zimbabwe, as they crept ever closer to completing a 2-0 whitewash on day four of the second Test in Bulawayo.
The hosts began the day on 305/6 needing 78 runs to avoid the follow-on after Craig Ervine's maiden Test century.
Captain Graeme Cremer went early as Zimbabwe's fightback waned, and despite the efforts of Ervine, Zimbabwe fell short of the follow-on total, but New Zealand chose instead to bat again.
Ish Sodhi finished with career best figures of 4 for 60.
New zealand lost openers Tom Latham (13) and Martin Guptill (11) cheaply before Kane Williamson (68*) and Ross Taylor (67*) powered the Kiwis to 166 for 2.
Williamson declared leaving Zimbabwe chasing 386 to win.
Zimbabwe's opening batsman were brave in the face of the New Zealand attack but when Chamu Chibhabha (21) departed with the score on 45, the hosts began to stutter.
Chibhabha's opening partner Tino Mawoyo (35) was next to go, trapped lbw by Trent Boult in the penultimate over of the day. Sikandar Raza then fell for a duck in the final over to Tim Southee bringing proceedings to a close with Zimbabwe on 58 for 3
New Zealand need just seven wickets to wrap up the series on day 5.
